PCR-based detection of mobile genetic elements in total community DNA
Article Abstract:
This article reports on the prevalence and diversity of plasmids in non-clinical bacterial populations. Combining mobile genetic elements analysis with polymerase chain reaction, the authors have shown the feasibility of such an analysis.

Exogenous isolation of antibiotic resistance plasmids from piggery manure slurries reveals a high prevalence and diversity of IncQ-like plasmids
Article Abstract:
Researchers isolated two different IncQ-like antibiotic resistance plasmids from pig manure that could be mobilized into Acinetobacter sp., Ralstonia eutropha, Agrobacterium tumefaciens, and Pseudomonas putida. IncQ plasmids have a broad host range and can be carried by gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria.

Increased abundance of IncP-1[beta] plasmids and mercury resistance genes in mercury-polluted river sediments: First discovery of Inc-1[beta] plasmids with a complex mer transposon as the sole accessory element
Article Abstract:
River sediment samples taken from the two mercury-polluted and two nonpolluted or less-polluted areas of the river Nura (Kazakhstan) are analyzed by PCR for the presence and abundance of mercury resistance genes and of broad-host-range plasmids. PCR-based detection revealed that mercury pollution corresponded to an increased abundance of mercury resistance genes and of IncP-1[beta] replicon-specific sequences detected in total community DNA.
